Transformations with the TI-92 R Oxley

This section is a result of work with pupils at Fir Tree Primary School

Changing a Triangle from a Scalene into an Isosceles and then into an Equilateral

The Geometry application allows the student to make changes that are not possible using tradditional pencil and paper methods.

We have measured each side of the triangle. As we use the hand tool to move the vertices of the triangle the length readouts change.

It is a little tricky to get all the side readouts to be equal.

Translations, Vectors and Rotations

It is very easy to translate a shape by simply grabbing the shape with the hand tool. As the shape moves it is not necessary to explain to the student how the orientation and the shapes dimensions are not altered by the translation.

We can also translate a shape using a Vector

The Vector does not have to be attached to the shape I use this technique to illustrate the starting and finishing position of a point on the shape.

Rotations

We select the Rotation Option

The hand tool is used to rotate the triangle. Notice how the translated image also rotates.

Students will notice how the Vector reacts as well as the Triangle.
